Description

1807 BD-8 Bust Left Half Eagle, MS62
First Year of Issue of a New Type

1807 $5 Bust Left, BD-8, R.2, MS62 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State d/b, the usual state. Green-gold surfaces contain slight silver highlights. Abrasions are present in the fields, but none individually stand out. Strike is strong, and all details are strongly impressed on both sides.

The BD-8 is the second of two die marriages known for 1807 Bust Left half eagles. It combines the obverse die used on BD-7 with a reverse that went on to be used for the first three die marriages of 1808 half eagles. It is one of the most available die marriages of early gold, but as with any early gold issue, this is all relative. Bass-Dannreuther set an upper bound of survivorship at 750 examples, and its large surviving population is an outlier at that. This is very low compared to minor silver denominations, where the average is about half that number, and for the half dollar denomination, many more common die marriages abound. This sets into perspective just how rare early gold really is, while the present offering provides an excellent example for a collector wishing to illustrate this fascinating and enigmatic series in their collections.
