Description

1843-C Large Date, Plain 4 Quarter Eagle
MS63, One of the Finest Known

1843-C $2 1/2 Large Date, Plain 4 MS63 NGC. Variety 1. Ex: Dingler. This is one of the nicest coins in the collection from the standpoint of appearance. It is frosty and "fresh," with lovely mottled orange-gold and reddish-gold hues in different configurations on the obverse and the reverse. The strike is typical for the issue, with some weakness noted in the central reverse. There are a few ticks in the obverse fields that one would expect from any coin of this design in MS63; the reverse is clean and choice. This is clearly among the top five or six known of this variety, and it is certainly the finest that is currently available to the collector. An impressive and important coin for the date collector or a wonderful type coin for the person searching for one high-quality quarter eagle from the Charlotte mint.
The 1843-C Large Date is far more available than its Small Date counterpart. In high grades, however, the Large Date is a rare and overlooked coin. There are an estimated 10 to 15 pieces known in Uncirculated. This includes one in NGC MS66, a PCGS MS65, and solitary MS64 examples at NGC and PCGS.
Ex: Paul Dingler Collection, (Stack's 3/1989), lot 180; Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 2/2009), lot 2452, where it brought $13,800.
