Description

Key 1843-C Small Date Quarter Eagle, MS62
Ex: Dingler Collection

1843-C $2 1/2 Small Date, Crosslet 4 MS62 PCGS Secure. Variety 1. Ex: Dingler. This is one of the most exciting quarter eagles in this exceptional collection. The obverse is somewhat prooflike and has nice medium green-gold color; the reverse is more satiny in texture, and it has a great appearance with some reddish hues forming on the highlights. A small amount of friction in the obverse fields, probably from storage in an album or cabinet, is enhanced by the reflectiveness on this side. This is one of the two or three finest examples of this key issue that we have seen; fresh, nice, and rare as such.
The 1843-C Small Date is the rarest Charlotte quarter eagle and the fourth rarest in high grades. It has the lowest mintage of any issue in the series with just 2,988 pieces believed to have been produced. Around 100 are known today with most in the XF40 to AU50 range. The Cherokee/Dingler example we offer here is tied with one other coin as the finest graded at PCGS and it is clearly well up in the Condition Census listings for the issue.
Ex: Paul Dingler Collection; Superior (5/1992), lot 2494; Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 2/2009), lot 2454, where it brought $28,750. When owned by Paul Dingler, this coin was in a PCGS MS61 holder.
