Description
1856 Flying Eagle Cent, PR64
Snow-9, Reflective Fields
1856 1C Snow-9 PR64 NGC. CAC. Snow-9 is the usual proof
variety encountered among 1856 Flying Eagle cents, identified
easily by looking for a small tine within the left ribbon end and a
thin horizontal die line near the forward edge of the eagle's left
wing near the NI. Many examples of this variety come with satiny
surfaces, but the present coin is somewhat reflective in the
fields. The subtle mirroring exposes hints of mint-green and rose
beneath otherwise warm tan-gold patina that increase the visual
appeal. The strike is sharp, and only a few light contact marks are
seen under magnification. The 1856 Flying Eagle cent was intended
as a pattern issue, although many of the pieces distributed to
Congress to support passage of the coin's legislation and some of
the pieces struck later for collectors wound up in circulation,
creating a wide grade range of survivors for modern-day
enthusiasts.From The Shadow Collection.
