Description
1878-S Seated Half Dollar, VF Details
Just 12,000 Pieces Struck, Few Survive
1878-S 50C WB-101, Die Pair 1, R.5 -- Engraved, Repaired -- NGC
Details. VF. The 1878-S is seldom-seen in any grade, a function
of its low mintage (just 12,000 pieces struck), and an accompanying
low survival rate. Bill Bugert suggests only about 60 pieces are
known in all grades combined. The issue was struck from a single
die pair. Production of the 1878-S was halted early in the year to
concentrate on coining silver dollars, compelled by the
Bland-Allison Act.A diagonal path of re-engraved detail covers portions of the olive branch on this example, extending to the eagle's left (facing) leg, shield, and right wing. The field near the eagle's head and left scroll end is smoothed, and other areas of the reverse field suggest careful tooling. Still, an authentic survivor of this rare and famous Seated issue is always in demand. Most pieces were melted or lost long ago.
Ex: Anderson DuPont Collection (Stack's, 11/54), lot 2214, where it sold for $350; ANA Charlotte National Money Show Auction, Presented by Robert Korver (Heritage, 3/2007), lot 823, which brought $37,375.
