Description

1861-C Five Dollar Liberty, AU58
High-End CAC Rarity
Possibly Struck by the Confederacy

1861-C $5 AU58 PCGS. CAC. Winter-1. Ex: The Fairmont Collection. The 1861-C is one of the more storied coins in the Charlotte half eagle series, and also a scarce date. Doug Winter estimates its survivorship (from 6,879 pieces struck) is 150 to 175 pieces, making the date challenging but collectible. It is most elusive in high AU and Mint State grades, and CAC-approved coins are decidedly rare. These things make the current former Fairmont coin stand out for its quality and conditional excellence. It is boldly struck and retains some luster throughout orange-gold patina, while the surfaces yield the traditional myriad abrasions typical of the issue. Its unabated originality is outstanding.

The Charlotte, North Carolina branch mint was invaded by Confederate soldiers on April 20, 1861. Winter notes that 887 of the coins tallied for the issue were produced in May, under the auspices of the Confederacy. Since only one die pair was used, and no major die state changes are noted for the May delivery, it is impossible to know what surviving 1861-C half eagles may have been struck by the Southern government, although few coins claim as close an association with the Confederacy as this the 1861-C gold pieces such as the half eagle. Population: 13 in 58 (1 in 58+), 4 finer. CAC: 6 in 58, 1 finer (11/24).
