Description
1868-S Half Eagle, MS62
The Single Finest Example Known
CAC Endorsed
1868-S $5 MS62 PCGS. CAC. The San Francisco half eagle
issues from the 1860s are, in a word, scarce. The 1868-S had a
mintage of 52,000 pieces, the highest half eagle production total
since the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861, but attrition took its
toll on survivors. Almost all known examples are in various
circulated grades, primarily XF and lower; AU representatives are
rare, and Mint State coins are seen so seldom that the offering of
such a coin at auction is a marquee event. This original example is
the finest of only four Mint State coins at PCGS (11/24). The soft
orange-gold surfaces yield smooth, softly frosted luster, with
fewer abrasions than are expected for the grade. The strike is soft
on the eagle's neck and the hair curls around Liberty's face, but
this is of little concern in comparison to this coin's status as
one of the finest 1868-S fives known. Population: 1 in 62, 0 finer.
CAC: 1 in 62, 0 finer (11/24).Ex: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 6/2015), lot 4258.(Registry values: P3)
