1873-CC $5 AU55 PCGS. CAC. Winter 2-B. Ex: The Fairmont Collection. Most Carson City collectors probably believe that the 1870-CC has the lowest mintage of any half eagle issue from the facility, but that honor actually goes to the 1873-CC. A mere 7,416 pieces were coined. Nonetheless, two die marriages are confirmed. Variety 2-A has a high mintmark, and the mintmark is entered noticeably lower on Variety 2-B. Variety 1-A is listed but unlikely to exist. This Choice AU example has a hint of olive-green toning across partly lustrous and moderately marked surfaces. The strike shows blending on Liberty's curls and the eagle's neck plumage and fletchings. Population: 7 in 55, 2 finer. CAC: 2 in 55, 0 finer (11/24).
