Description

1909 Half Eagle, Satin Finish PR64
Only 78 Proofs Distributed

1909 $5 Satin Finish, JD-1, R.5, PR64 NGC. CAC. Collector dissatisfaction with the sandblast proof finish introduced in 1908 prompted the Mint to attempt a new finish in 1909. While the old polished fields appearance could not be achieved with Pratt's sunken-relief design, the Mint attempted to get as close as possible. Unfortunately, the semiprooflike sheen did not satisfy the public and only 78 proofs were distributed to collectors from 230 proofs struck. The remainder was melted. Today, the rarity and unique appearance of the 1909 satin proofs make these coins highly sought-after among collectors. This is a Choice proof example recognized by CAC for its high quality at the PR64 grade level. A deep, razor-sharp strike makes for the strong visual impact of this near-Gem 1909 Satin Finish proof. Attractive straw-gold surfaces show only a few minor marks that determine the assigned grade. NGC Census: 15 in 64, 20 finer. CAC: 3 in 64, 13 finer (11/24).
