Description

1928-S Half Dollar, MS65+
Exceptionally Clean and Attractive

1928-S 50C MS65+ PCGS Secure. CAC. Ex: Duckor. The 1928 Annual Mint Director's Report explains that production for the fiscal year reflected "the considerable demand for gold coin for export and reduced requirement of coins below the dollar for home circulation... ." Consequently, the 1928-S enjoys a fairly low mintage of 1.9 million coins and claims status as a conditionally scarce semikey. In fact, it ranks in the top quintile of all Walking Liberty half dollars in Gem condition or finer. This piece easily approaches the finest examples at PCGS.

Strike characteristics for this Plus-designated, CAC-approved Gem are in line with production standards for the San Francisco Mint during this period, with softness on the branch hand and eagle's leg. However, the eye appeal and exceptional level of preservation more than make up for it. Colorful toning adheres to the margins, featuring attractive gold, violet, and cobalt-blue shades. Frosty with a few minuscule, well-hidden ticks. Population: 62 in 65 (1 in 65+), 8 finer. CAC: 35% of submissions for this issue/grade passed. 17 in 65, 2 finer (11/17).
