Description

1806 Half Eagle, AU58
Popular Knobbed 6, BD-6 Variety

1806 $5 Round Top 6, 7x6 Stars AU58 NGC. BD-6, R.2. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/c. The 1806 Capped Bust Right half eagle claims a mintage of 64,093 pieces, with six die varieties known for the date. The present coin represents the popular BD-6 variety, the only one with a knobbed 6 in the date. The BD-6 is the most available variety of the year and probably accounted for 35,000-50,000 pieces of the original mintage. With an estimated surviving population of 600-900 pieces in all grades, the BD-6 is a favorite choice of type collectors seeking an example of the Capped Bust Right design.
The coin offered here is a well-detailed near-Mint example, with just a slight touch of wear showing on the high points of the design elements. A little softness shows on the shield and minute traces of adjustment marks can be seen in the reverse dentils at 2 o'clock. The attractive greenish-gold surfaces retain much of their original mint luster.(Registry values: P2)
