Description

1823 Bust Half, Sharp AU53
Broken 3, O-101

1823 50C Broken 3, O-101, R.3, AU53 PCGS. An early state of the O-101 variety, the Broken 3 soon gives way to the Patched 3 in a later die state. Semireflective fields beneath light, golden-gray toning also indicate an early state of the dies. This example is sharply struck even with flat right-side stars, which are normal for the die pair. The smooth and attractive surfaces are exceptionally free of marks for the assigned grade. The Broken 3 is a separate Guide Book listing, as are the Patched 3 and Ugly 3 varieties, all of which are popular with collectors.
