Description

Interesting Gem 1896-S Dollar

1896-S $1 MS65 PCGS. This later S-mint issue is among the more challenging dates for its time, particularly above the Choice level; despite a mintage of 5 million pieces, it was not saved in quantity, and only a handful of truly high-end pieces are available today. This well-defined example has smooth, creamy luster with generally silver surfaces that show occasional splashes of milky patina. Eye appeal is strong and delightful, with only a handful of isolated ticks and grazes visible in the fields. A faint flaw on Liberty's cheek precludes an even higher designation. PCGS has graded only three finer examples (11/08).(Registry values: P7, N4719)
