1857 1C Small Date MS65 Red and Brown NGC. N-4, R.1. The orange-red color is only slightly mellowed on the cheek and exposed fields. The stars are flatly struck, but the portrait is sharp and the surfaces are carefully preserved. One of only two business strike Newcomb varieties for the year with Small Date logotypes.Ex: John Jay Pittman Collection (Akers, 10/1997), lot 283, where it realized $1,540.
