Description

1846-D/D Five Dollar, AU58
Widely Repunched Mintmark

1846-D/D $5 AU58 NGC. Variety 16-J, VP-001. The 1846-D/D is the most dramatic repunched mintmark variety of the half eagle denomination. The Dahlonega mintmark was initially entered too far northeast (northwest from the perspective of the diesinker). The errant placement could not be lapped away, since that would have removed detail from the branch and fletching. The second mintmark placement was proper. This near-Mint green-gold representative has an above average strike and is free from any distracting marks.(Registry values: P3)
