Description

1843-O Large O Seated Quarter, MS63+
Finest Known, Ex: Eliasberg

1843-O 25C Large O, FS-501, MS63+ PCGS. CAC. Ex: Eliasberg. The Large O mintmark, as Cherrypickers' notes, was "likely intended for a half dollar." This piece is an early die state of the variety, where the high mintmark brushes up against the arrow fletchings and the olive branch. Only minor signs of die rust exist -- a feature that contrasts with most examples, where the dies are heavily rusted. Both sides are blanketed in attractive shades of dove-gray, champagne-gold, and lavender toning, with soft mint luster shining through the patina. The design elements are well-detailed, and the fields show only minor signs of contact.

This is the sole finest example of the Large O 1843-O Seated quarter by a country mile, unknown in Uncirculated until the 1997 Eliasberg sale. NGC reports an MS64 example, but it is the same coin as this one. Now certified MS63+ PCGS with CAC endorsement, it is the only 1843-O Large O quarter certified in Uncirculated by either service, with its nearest competitor at PCGS grading only AU53. The finest at NGC is XF45 once the duplicate submission is removed. Population: 1 in 63+, 0 finer (9/16).
