Description

1880-O Morgan, MS65
Boldly Struck, Snow-White Surfaces

1880-O $1 Ear Overdate MS65 NGC. VAM-6A. A Top 100 Variety. Both a condition rarity and a strike rarity, this New Orleans issue is seldom seen in Gem or finer grades, or with a full strike. This brilliant-white example displays both positives. Highly lustrous fields are smooth and clean. Liberty's cheek is unmarked. High, protective rims apparently shielded the coin from postmint contact with other coins, as there are very few disturbances seen on the attractive, frosted surfaces. PCGS and NGC combined have certified just two numerically higher examples (3/14).

The VAM-6A variety is characterized by a remaining "ear" of a 7 at the top left side of the second 8 in the date and a Small O mintmark placed slightly to the right of its normal centered position.
