Description

Scarce (R.4) 1794 Head of 1793 Large Cent, S-19b

1794 1C Head of 1793 AU55 Damaged Uncertified. S-19b, R.4. All die marriages of the 1794 Head of 1793 Cent are scarce, if not rare, and the present example should be of obvious importance to early copper specialists and type collectors alike. This is really not a bad looking coin despite the impairments. Both sides display fully denticulated borders, although the reverse is much bolder in this area--a characteristic of this die marriage. The central features are well brought up and the only readily evident wear is over the central obverse highpoints. The revere is toned in glossy-brown shades, the obverse is predominantly lighter in appearance with sandy-tan toning and a swath of deeper color in the field before Liberty's portrait. The damage noted above is mostly confined to the obverse: there are several small indentations in the center, and a group of pinscratches are visible in the right field. The reverse exhibits two old digs in the field above the C in CENT. Tom Reynolds ranks this coin #13 on the Condition Census listing for S-19b based on EAC grading standards.
