Description
1902 Select Twenty Dollar
Extremely Rare Any Finer
1902 $20 MS63 NGC. CAC. The 1902 double eagle had a sparse
mintage of 31,140 coins, remarkably low compared to the thousands
or millions of pieces posted by other dates. As might be expected,
examples are scarce in nearly all grades. Most Mint State survivors
grade MS61 or 62, and the population drops precipitously at the
MS63 level, the highest grade most collectors will encounter. NGC
and PCGS have seen a total of only 11 examples finer. This Select offering displays highly lustrous orange-gold somewhat satiny surfaces, and the strike is bold. A few trivial, scattered marks, most notably a shallow graze on the O in GOD, define the grade. Census: 15 in 63, 2 finer (4/12).(Registry values: N4719)
Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 26CU, PCGS# 9041, Greysheet# 9837)
Weight: 33.44 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
