1845-D $2 1/2 MS63 NGC. Variety 6-J. Although the mintages are similar, the 1845-D quarter eagle in higher grades is significantly rarer than the 1844-D. NGC has certified two submissions in MS60, five in MS61, and one each in MS62 and MS63 (this piece). PCGS has seen five grading events in MS61, two MS62, and one each in MS63 and MS64 (12/13). Even though duplications are all but certain, these grades place this coin in a second place within the Condition Census, a position confirmed by our Permanent Auction Archives which show that the Duke's Creek coin and this piece are, in fact, the same, despite Winter's Condition Census listing them separately in the third edition of his D-mint reference.

This piece is far finer than the typical 1845-D, coins that Winter describes as showing subdued, grainy luster and poor eye appeal. Bright luster radiates from the greenish-gold surfaces of this Select Mint State coin. The strike is sharp overall, particularly on the obverse peripheral stars and throughout the reverse. Typical softness appears on the central hair curls. Bold die clashing appears on the reverse, along with an interesting, raised die lump just below the first S of STATES. A few small marks determine the grade, yet this coin offers exceptional eye appeal.
