Description

Gorgeous 1864 Three Cent Silver, MS68 PCGS

1864 3CS MS68 PCGS. A breathtakingly beautiful example of this elusive business strike. Only 12,470 coins were struck of both proofs and commercial strikings, with 470 of those being proofs. A good percentage of the business strikes were melted in July, 1873 upon the discontinuation of the series. This lovely specimen is richly toned in variegated shades of gold, lilac, and electric-blue, with deeper shades prevailing on the obverse. Thick mint frost radiates from the surfaces, and the strike is excellent for a silver three cent piece. Only the stars along the reverse left border are a trifle soft in the centers. Strong clash marks (as made) are seen on the obverse. No abrasions are apparent on the well preserved surfaces. Population: 5 in 68, 0 finer (3/04).(#3684) (Registry values: N1)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 22ZE, PCGS# 3684, Greysheet# 3631)
