Description

1893-S Barber Half Dollar, MS65
Tied for Second-Finest Certified

1893-S 50C MS65 PCGS Secure. CAC. With only 12 examples certified MS65 or finer in the combined PCGS and NGC Census, the 1893-S ranks high on the list of Barber half dollar rarities. The 1893-S in Gem or finer grades is rarer than generally believed, with a surviving population of just 10 to 12 examples. We agree with Dr. Shireman's assessment of the rarity:

"This is a very underrated coin in our opinion, possibly the rarest Barber half in Gem or better. The 1893-S is certainly rarer than its "big brother" the 1893-S Morgan dollar in gem and better, but demand for the half dollars is not as high as for the ubiquitous Morgan dollars. The 1893-S is among our favorite dates, and about as close to a 'key' date as there is in this set, despite the attention the 1904-S half gets. Compared to prices paid for 1904-S halves in MS65 and better, the 1893-S is a real sleeper, in our opinion."

This beautiful, boldly defined Gem exhibits brilliant silver surfaces with a hint of gold toning that accents the satin luster. The Shireman example is one of the two or three finest 1893-S Barber half dollars. In fact, Dr. Shireman considers his own piece to be finer than the sole MS66 example.
