1897-S Barber Half Dollar, MS67
Tied for the Finest PCGS Certified

1897-S 50C MS67 PCGS Secure. Only 17 Gem or finer 1897-S Barber half dollars have been graded by PCGS in nearly 30 years. The Shireman coin is one of the finest, and it is tied with four other submissions for the best that PCGS has examined (10/15). This is an "old friend" that was handled by our predecessor firm four decades ago. That description holds true today:

"Gem Uncirculated ... with the most beautiful toning imaginable. A most impressive coin and a very undervalued issue."

Dr. Shireman was likewise enamored:
"This beautiful half dollar is a pleasure to behold, one of the old-time classic rarities of the set, in Superb Gem condition. This is a date that is hard to find coin, carrying a premium over the common dates in all grades. Clearly a high-end example that was carefully preserved since its striking nearly 120 years ago."

All of the design elements are boldly rendered on frosty silver luster that exhibits lovely sky-blue, rose, and gold toning. The surfaces are virtually perfect and the eye appeal is first-rate. We cannot imagine that any of the other MS67 examples have better eye appeal.
