Description
1865 Liberty Half Eagle in Gilt Copper
Judd-446, Mint State Sharpness
With Motto Transitional Pattern
1865 $5 Liberty Half Eagle, Judd-446, Pollock-518, High R.6 --
Surfaces Plated -- PCGS Genuine. Proof, Unc Details. A
transitional pattern identical in design to the issued 1866 Motto
half eagle, except dated 1865. Struck in copper with a reeded edge.
Two are known in gold, one in the Smithsonian and another untraced
since the King Farouk sale seven decades ago. The Teichman roster
lists 21 specimens, four of which are gilt. Teichman notes that
there may be fewer gilt pieces due to duplications within his
roster. The present piece is gilt but displays hints of sea-green
toning. The strike is sharp though shy of complete. One small spot
is beneath the lowest arrowhead.
