Description
1857 N-5 Proof-Only Large Cent, PR65 Red
Ted Naftzger's Finest Known
1857 1C PR65 Red PCGS. CAC. N-5, High R.5. Ex: Naftzger
Collection. In the Naftzger catalog, Bob Grellman grades this piece
PR66 and calls it finest known. Bill Noyes assigns the same grade
and also places it first in his census. We see no reason to call it
anything less. The cataloger for the 1952 ANA Sale wrote that this is "By far the finest Proof Large Cent we have ever seen. Few Proof 'Pennies' have survived in this preservation, and many of those have been tampered with." A decade earlier, the Morgenthau cataloger was doing his patriotic duty during World War II when he wrote: "Brilliant red proof," saving valuable paper for the war effort.
This amazing Red Gem proof large cent has brilliant orange mint color with traces of steel-blue toning and a few tiny carbon specks. Those trivial specks are visible in the 1952 ANA catalog plate, indicating no change over the last 60 years, and no risk of change in the future. The fields are flawless, with light die polishing lines that limit the depth of the mirrored fields. The polishing lines are characteristic of the proof-only N-5 die pair, and are visible to some extent on all known specimens. This amazing proof large cent offers incredible aesthetic appeal and is destined for a world-class cabinet. Our EAC grade PR66. Population: 1 in 65 Red, 0 finer (1/12).
Ex: J.C. Morgenthau (6/1942), lot 372; Henry C. Hines; Homer K. Downing (1952 ANA Sale, New Netherlands, et al., 8/1952), lot 2225; R.E. Naftzger, Jr. (Goldberg Coins, 9/2009), lot 1304; New York Signature (Heritage, 3/2012), lot 3058, which realized $57,500.
