Description
1793 S-8, B-13 Wreath Cent, MS62 Brown
Ex: Masters, Husak
1793 1C Wreath Cent, Vine and Bars MS62 Brown PCGS. S-8, B-13,
R.3. Ex: Husak. Die State II with minor obverse clash marks and
a die crack along the diagonal bulge through the center of the
wreath. Del Bland grades this coin AU50 and tied for CC-10, while
we feel a slightly higher grade is appropriate. Splendid steel and
chocolate-brown surfaces blend with olive and traces of red in the
protected areas. The only marks, barely worth describing, are a
minuscule rim bump left of L and a small mark between the tops of
EN in CENT. This is an exceptional piece with impressive eye
appeal. The Philadelphia Mint only produced copper coins from the first issues of March 1793 until October 1794 when the first silver coins were struck, after a difficult bonding issue was resolved through a Congressional amendment. Production of 1793 cents totaled just over 110,000 coins, and nearly 1 million cents were minted in 1794. There were also a little more than 100,000 half cents struck in those two years, or about 100,000 coins per month for both denominations. Our EAC grade AU55.
