Description

1813 Capped Head Half Eagle
BD-1 Variety, MS62

1813 $5 BD-1, R.2, MS62 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/a. This is the first year of the Capped Head Left design. The 1813 BD-1 half eagle is the most readily available year and variety of the type. The reverse design also showed modifications of the eagle and arrows. Although no information remains in United States Mint archives as to the specific duties of Chief Engraver Robert Scot and Assistant Engraver John Reich during the 1807 to 1817 years of Reich's Mint employment, the wing feathers are the style engraved by Reich, and the Capped Head is generally considered to be a Reich engraved design.

This coin is a nice example for the MS62 grade with rich orange gold toning and olive highlights in protected areas. A shallow mark under the eagle's right wing is noted. Satiny luster and great eye appeal enhance the desirability of this coin.
