Description

Elusive Mint State 1867 Double Eagle, Finest at Either Service

1867 $20 MS63 PCGS. The 1867 issue is one of the few early dates among Type Two (With Motto) double eagles that can occasionally be found in Mint State. This example is sharply struck for the issue, with superlative glowing mint frost and only the slightest abrasions on either side. Interestingly, the same date logotype punch used for this issue was also employed on the 1867 Liberty Seated silver dollars, according to Bowers' double eagle reference. The surfaces are an attractive two-toned ensemble, with yellow-orange centers that cede to greenish-gold at the borders. This piece is also the single finest-graded 1867 double eagle at PCGS. NGC has certified two coins at MS63, with none finer (7/06). The Bass Collection coin, for reference, was an MS61 example.(Registry values: N7079)
