Description
1840-O Quarter Eagle, MS62
Important First-Year Issue
One of the Finer-Known Examples
1840-O $2 1/2 MS62 PCGS. Variety 2. Christian Gobrecht's
Liberty Head quarter eagle design was introduced in 1840, being
produced at the mints in Philadelphia, Charlotte, Dahlonega, and
New Orleans. The mintage figure from New Orleans was the highest
with 33,580 examples struck, but this issue has not proven to be a
common one. In fact, it should be considered rare, especially in
mint condition. This attractive piece is softly struck in the centers, as always, with pleasing luster and greenish-gold toning that turns to deeper apricot color near the borders. A group of russet specks are noted on the upper left obverse. A few wispy marks are seen on each side, mainly in the fields. Among the better-known examples, it is one of seven coins graded MS62 by PCGS, with none finer. NGC has seen five MS62 examples, while grading just one piece even finer at MS63 (3/14).(Registry values: P2)
