Description

1802/1 B-3, BB-234 Silver Dollar
Usual Late Die State, AU58

1802/1 $1 Wide Date AU58 NGC. CAC. B-3, BB-234, R.3. The large die chip in the right obverse field, midway between star 8 and Liberty's eye, is diagnostic for this variety, appearing on every known example. Although an early die state without this feature could exist, none are known. Steel-blue and iridescent toning surrounds the gorgeous natural lilac-brown color of this lovely dollar, with reflective fields. This piece may rank among the finest known examples of the variety. In 1993, Dave Bowers recorded two Mint State pieces and only four other AU coins. We believe this piece ranks favorably with the 10 finest known examples. Census: 18 in 58, 7 finer (11/12).
Ex: Dallas Signature (Heritage, 11/2007), lot 951, which realized $17,250.(Registry values: P1)
