Description

1802/1 B-3, BB-234 Dollar, MS62
A Census-Level Specimen

1802/1 $1 Wide Date MS62 NGC. B-3, BB-234, R.3. Bowers-Borckardt Die State III, the usual state with an oblong die lump in the right obverse field. Easily a Condition Census specimen and possibly the finest known, this piece is the first example listed in the Notable Specimens roster of the Bowers-Borckardt reference. More recently, an MS63 PCGS example appeared in the Cardinal Collection sale, and a similarly graded MS62 NGC example of this variety appeared in the January 2006 American Numismatic Rarities sale. An MS61 PCGS specimen is part of the famous Hesselgesser Collection on the PCGS Set Registry.
This impressive overdate dollar has satin luster beneath delicate gold and champagne toning, gradually changing to steel-blue along the left side of the obverse and reverse. The strike is sharp, especially on the reverse, with only a few trivial marks.
Ex: Harley L. Freeman Collection (CSNS Sale, May 1977); Goshen Collection (Stack's, 2/1978), lot 310; Robison Collection (Stack's, 2/1982), lot 1881. (Registry values: P1)
