Late Die State

1838-C $2 1/2 AU58 PCGS. Winter-1, Variety 20, R.3. The first quarter eagle produced at the Charlotte Mint, this date (7,880 pieces produced) is known from a single die pair. This piece represents a late die state with a reverse die crack from the border over the left wing, and another from the eagle's beak to the left shield point. This honey-gold representative is minimally worn with bold, if not sharp definition in all areas. A series of moderate distractions are seen in the upper and right reverse fields, and there is a short scratch in the left obverse field. Population: 12 in 58, 6 finer (10/16).
