Description

1838-D Classic Head Half Eagle, MS60
Rarely Seen in Uncirculated Condition

1838-D $5 MS60 NGC. McCloskey 1-A, R.3. In the words of branch mint gold authority Doug Winter, the 1838-D half eagle "becomes very scarce in the higher About Uncirculated grades, and extremely rare in full Mint State." This is born out by the certified population figures, which list a total of 21 Uncirculated submissions, none of which are finer than MS63. The present coin is the single lowest-grade Mint State example known and represents an ideal passage across the Mint State threshold for the casual collector. The strike is razor-sharp, and each side displays semiprooflike orange-gold fields. Scattered abrasions and old scratches in the fields limit the grade, although luster prevails. Census: 1 in 60, 10 finer (10/16).
