Description
1863 Aluminum Postage Currency Pattern
Judd-327, PR66, Alloyed With Silicon
1863 10C Ten Cents, Judd-327, Pollock-397, Cassel-59, High R.6,
PR66 NGC. 8 grains. The obverse depicts a Union shield pierced
by two arrows; a simple wreath rests above. The remainder of the
design consists of token-like legends; EXCHANGED FOR U.S. NOTES on
the obverse, POSTAL CURRENCY ACT JULY 1862 and 10 CENTS 1863 on the
reverse. Struck in aluminum (mostly) with a plain edge. The actual
composition of this pattern as determined by SEM-EDX testing
(conducted by Ledoux & Company on certificate number 1285227-001 is
96.6% aluminum, 2.3% iron, 0.9% silicon, and 0.1% lead. Many
aluminum and tin patterns are actually alloyed with a small amount
of silicon which hardens the resultant alloy and helps preserve the
surfaces. This is a remarkably bright example of aluminum coinage
with no areas of oxidation present. A shallow, irregular area of
planchet roughness is observed between the 1 in the date and CT of
ACT. This is believed to be one of the 1863-dated presentation
coins delivered to Salmon P. Chase. In 1863 aluminum was still an
expensive metal. This piece had an intrinsic value of five cents,
yet it weighed just a twentieth of a silver dime that was worth ten
cents.Ex: Lester Merkin to Milton R.
