Description
1868 Postage Currency Pattern in Copper
Judd-645, PR67 Brown
Thin Planchet, Probably Unique as Such
1868 10C Ten Cents, Judd-645, Pollock-717, Cassel-28, High R.7,
PR67 Brown PCGS. 28.1 grains. Ex: Bass. A rare Postage Currency
related pattern, dated 1868. The obverse displays the expected
central shield with diagonal arrows behind, EXCHANGED FOR above and
U.S. NOTES below. The reverse is a variant of the adopted design
with the central wreath surrounding ONE DIME, a six-pointed star
above and the date below. Struck in copper, medallic alignment on a
thin planchet, and with a plain edge. This appears to be the only
thin planchet, light weight example known of this pattern. At least
one thick planchet coin exists and possibly two exist at 38.6
grains. This seldom-seen 1868 Postage Currency pattern has two
distinctive characteristics. The first is the previously mentioned
misdated date punch used -- the coin having actually been struck in
1863 -- and showing a pronounced lack of die cracking seen on later
1863 strikes. Second is the curious double-struck reverse. There is
approximately 5 degrees of rotation between the first and second
strike, and no evidence of double striking on the obverse. SEM-EDX
testing conducted by QC Metallurgical on certificate number
60863.67/5500641 showed this piece to be almost pure copper. The
exact breakdown is 97.65% copper and 2.35% iron. The surfaces on
this piece are nothing less than spectacular. The PR67 grade tells
much more about the appearance than does the Brown designation.
Each side has an inescapable deep blue patina and the deeply
mirrored fields further enhance the vibrancy of the color. What is
not stated on the insert is the contrast present on each side, but
the fields and devices display a stark cameo effect. The surfaces
are almost perfectly preserved.Ex: The Palace Collections of Egypt - Farouk (Sotheby's, 2/1954), lot 1815; Sol Kaplan; Harry X Boosel Collection (RARCOA, 1/1973), lot 589; Brinton T. Schorer to Harry Bass (5/3/1973); Harry Bass Collection, Part I (Bowers and Merena, 5/1999), lot 1086; David Cassel.
