Description

1868-Dated Ten Cents Pattern
Judd-646, PR63
Unique Aluminum / Silver Alloy Composition

1868 10C Ten Cents, Judd-646, Pollock-718, Cassel-70, R.7, PR63 PCGS. 11.6 grains. An unusual and rare pattern with a small shield and inverted wreath on the obverse and a legend that reads EXCHANGED FOR U.S. NOTES. The reverse is laid out with ONE DIME in the center, a six-pointed star above, the date below, and all surrounded by a wreath of cotton, corn, and tobacco. Struck in aluminum / silver alloy with a plain edge. As with the PR61 Judd-646 above, this piece was struck in a similarly unusual alloy. The differing compositions of each lend a unique quality to each. This piece was SEM-EDX tested by QC Metallurgical on Certificate number 60864.63/13189788, which showed the piece to be composed of 80.4% aluminum, 18.10% silver, 0.9% silicon, and 0.7% iron. In addition to the singular metallic compositions of these Judd-646 pieces, they are noteworthy for another reason. The die cracks on the obverse are less advanced than those on the aluminum Die 1-A presentation pieces. The significance being this proves these pieces were struck in May 1863, not in 1868 as the date on these pieces would lead one to believe. This example lacks the chalky color of the other Judd-646, and the fields are moderately bright. There are numerous spots of oxidation on each side, a problem seen on many aluminum patterns that were not stored properly.
