Description

1863 Indian Cent in Bronze
Judd-299, Thin Planchet, PR64 Brown

1863 1C One Cent, Judd-299, Pollock-359, R.3, PR64 Brown PCGS. Struck from regular issue, plain edge dies, but in bronze instead of copper-nickel. No L on the ribbon. The Indian cent alloy switched from bronze to copper-nickel during 1864. The dies exhibit medallic alignment, as usual for Judd-299, and this is a thin planchet variant. This pattern was the Mint's first experiment with bronze. Only 200 or so pieces are believed known. Strike details on this piece are complete throughout, and the fields are deeply reflective with rich brown and blue patina.
