Description

1863 Indian Cent in Copper-Nickel
Judd-300, Pollock-362, MS64
Low Date Variant

1863 1C One Cent, Judd-300, Pollock-362, R.7, MS64 PCGS. 71.9 grains. Ex: Starr. The regular dies trial issue for the 1863 Indian cent. Struck in copper-nickel but with a reeded edge. This is a low date variant, and is rare as such with only a half dozen known according to USPatterns.com. Business strikes can be distinguished by the crooked fleck on the cheek below the eye. Pollock, in his standard reference on patterns, broke the single Judd variety into three variants, two in proof format and Pollock-362 as a business strike. A reeded edge Uncirculated piece was first offered in public auction in an 1865 Cogan sale. For a copper-nickel coin, the surfaces display a remarkable amount of red patina. The surfaces glow with mint luster, and there are no mentionable contact marks present.
Ex: Floyd Starr (Stack's, 10/1992), lot 1046.
