Description

1863 Copper-Nickel Indian Cent, MS64
Low-Date Judd-300, Pollock-362 Variety

1863 1C One Cent, Judd-300, Pollock-362, R.7, MS64 PCGS. Regular dies trial issue for the Indian cent. Struck in copper-nickel with a reeded edge. This is a Low Date example with the diagnostic hook-shaped mark on the cheek just below the eye. What is significant about this pattern is their experimental nature, they were struck in both business strike and proof format, with a reeded edge. These pieces were believed at one time to have had the reeds filed into each coin, but was recently disproved. Compared to the other MS64 above, this piece displays more traditional "white" surfaces of a copper-nickel coin with just faint tinges of red present. A bit softly defined on the tips of the feathers in the headdress, and showing no objectionable contact marks.
