1793 Liberty Cap Cent, VG10
Pleasing S-13, B-20 Example
1793 1C Liberty Cap VG10 NGC. S-13, B-20, R.4. Mint Engraver
Joseph Wright designed the Liberty Cap motif in the summer of 1793,
as an artistic improvement over the earlier Chain and Wreath
designs of that date. Four obverse and two reverse dies were
completed and combined to produce six different die varieties for
the date and type. The present coin represents the S-13 variety,
with the L in LIBERTY nearly touching the beaded border and a
triple leaf below OF on the reverse. A poll of EAC members voted
Sheldon-13 the most beautiful of all the 1793 varieties.This attractive coin retains all important design detail, at least in outline, with date and legends bold. The slightly granular chocolate-brown surfaces show some minor porosity near OF and some minor abrasions are evident on both sides, but the overall presentation is quite pleasing. Our EAC grade VG7.
