Description

Near-Mint 1849-D Gold Dollar
Scarce Centered Mintmark Variant

1849-D G$1 AU58 NGC. Variety 1-B. Centered Mintmark. This variety shows the mintmark fairly well-centered and lower. It is scarce and more elusive than the Variety 1-A, which shows the mintmark shifted further to the left of the bowknot and a bit higher up. This piece and that pictured in the Doug Winter reference, second edition, both show a slender die crack connecting the tops of the mintmark to the ribbon ends, and beyond. This is a nice, attractive, yellow-gold example, scarcely circulated, of the most available D-mint gold dollar.(Registry values: N1793)
