Description

1840 Quarter Eagle, MS63
Rarely Seen This Fine

1840 $2 1/2 MS63 NGC. The debut Liberty quarter eagle from the Philadelphia Mint is scarce in all grades with a survival estimated at "about 100" pieces by PCGS. Auction appearance data seems to substantiate that assessment. The issue is also a great rarity in Mint State and prohibitively rare above MS63. This Select representative displays satiny yellow-gold luster and minimal abrasions. Considerable strike weakness is seen on each side, as is typical. Census: 2 in 63, 4 finer (10/16).
