Description

1867 Five Cent Mule, PR61
Judd-582, R.8

1867 5C Five Cents, Judd-582, Pollock-642, R.8, PR61 PCGS. A muling of the design that was adopted for the three cent nickel, but here adapted to the size of a nickel. Paired with the regular No Rays reverse. Struck in nickel with a plain edge. These pieces are believed to have been struck outside the Mint from dies sold as scrap, perhaps by Joseph Mickley. The reverse on this piece shows pronounced double striking. Presumably, the hammer (reverse) die rotated approximately ten degrees between strikes while the anvil (obverse) die was stationary. A pearl-gray specimen that displays delicate hairlines and a couple of small gray spots. Only one other example of Judd-582 is certified, as PR50 by PCGS.
Ex: Crosby Collection (John Haseltine, 6/1883), lot 1803, where it brought 75 cents; Lenox Lohr (Empire Fixed Price List); Tramonta Collection (Bowers and Merena, 10/2005), lot 7345, which realized $8,050.

Coin Index Numbers: (PCGS# 60794, Greysheet# 13081)
