Condition Census 1918-S Standing Liberty Quarter, MS 66 Full Head PCGS

1918-S 25C MS 66 Full Head PCGS. With an original delivery of more than 11 million pieces, the 1918-S wins top honors among Standing Liberty quarters from the California branch mint. The last year of the Great War, America's economy remained strong through the New Year. While this burgeoning economic activity accounts for the record production figure, it also explains why the '18-S is among the worst struck issues in the entire series. In an effort to maintain high production levels, the staff in San Francisco undoubtedly used the quarter dies far beyond their accepted life span. In stark contrast to the typically encountered survivor, this flashy Gem displays razor sharp delineation that elicits every last detail of Liberty's head. Although not complete, the eagle's breast feathers, Liberty's gown lines, and the inner shield all display definition that is well above par for the issue. Adequately frosted, the faces combine a lightly toned, champagne-russet reverse with an essentially brilliant obverse. This is the single finest coin certified by PCGS to date, although NGC reports a lone MS 67 Full Head example (9/99).
