1873 Trade Dollar Pattern in Silver
Judd-1322, PR64

1873 T$1 Trade Dollar, Judd-1322, Pollock-1465, R.4, PR64 PCGS. The obverse is similar to the adopted design, but with a longer base on the rock that extends to the right (facing) rim behind Liberty. The reverse shows a small eagle high in the field, with spread wings and holding a ribbon that is nearly a closed loop in its beak. Struck in silver with a reeded edge. These patterns were struck in silver, copper, aluminum, and white metal. The six-piece sets in silver, with plain and reeded edges, were sold by the Mint for $30. The fields are moderately reflective and the centers display rose-gray patina that darkens slightly around the margins.
