Description

Extremely Rare 1849 Proof Quarter

1849 PR 63 PCGS. All proofs struck before 1858 are scarce and many are rare. The 1849 proof quarter is in the latter category and, in fact, is the rarest denomination of this date. This is the first piece we have handled and one of only 6 or 7 pieces believed known. The surfaces are essentially untoned with a hint of golden-tan color at the outermost border. The fields are deeply reflective and the intensity of the mirrored flash is plentifully evident even with the scattered hairlines that have accumulated over the years. This coin's rarity is further reinforced by examining the numbers that are available from both of the grading services for August, 1997: this is one of only three pieces that have been certified by PCGS, NGC has seen only one, and we wonder if there are any resubmissions. This piece presents the collector with a rare opportunity to acquire a proof quarter that was produced years before the mint began commercial production of proofs for sale to the public.
