1866-S Motto Eagle, AU55
Underrated S-Mint Rarity
1866-S $10 Motto AU55 NGC. Both 1866-S eagles, with and
without IN GOD WE TRUST, are important low-mintage rarities. Those
struck after the motto was instated claim a mintage of 11,500 coins
-- 3,000 more than the No Motto coins. PCGS provides a survival
estimate of 60 to 80 Motto eagles. This is an example of nearly
unsurpassed quality. Partly lustrous peach-gold surfaces retain
good detail over the devices despite minimal circulation. Each side
exhibits myriad abrasions, typical for the issue. Census: 7 in 55,
