1867 MS Five Cent Obverse Die Trial, J-A1867-10, R.8, MS62 Uncertified. Uniface obverse die trial used on the five cent patterns, Judd-561 through 565. The design features an Indian princess central motif, 1867 below, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the top margin. Differing from the patterns as it lacks LONGACRE F. below the truncation. Struck in lead. Diagonally cracked from northwest to southeast. As a result, the piece now has cardboard backing to reinforce it. The surface is mostly light gray with slightly darker color over the devices. According to USPatterns.com only two pieces are known.
Ex: Dr. Hewitt Judd; Abe Kosoff Estate (Bowers and Merena, 11/1985), lot 1143; plate coin in the Judd pattern reference, 1st through 7th editions.
