1861-S AU 53 NGC. This is a date we have great respect for and have seen very few examples of, in any grade. In AU 53, this coin is one of the finest examples known. Only 3 other pieces have been certified by NGC as AU 53 (2/98) with seven pieces finer (the finest being AU 58). This is a lovely coin with bright surfaces that still show much luster, especially in the more protected areas of the design. Well struck throughout and showing much rich reddish color in the fields. There are the usual number of abrasions for a coin of this grade, the only one of note being a scratch across the bottom of the truncation of the bust.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 2648, PCGS# 8634, Greysheet# 9460)
