Description
Rare, Low Mintage 1872 Eagle in XF 40
1872 XF 40 PCGS. The 1872 is one of the rarest issues in the entire Coronet series, and is one that is often recognized by collectors who do not specialize in gold. Just 1,620 business strikes were produced and survivors probably number fewer than two dozen coins. Most are heavily marked and well circulated, with this XF 40 being just about the median grade seen. This piece does not show any large or distracting marks, just a few small ones on each side that are consistent with the grade. Some softness of strike is noted on the highpoints and there is subtle brightness under a milky reddish-orange patina.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 264Z, PCGS# 8663, Greysheet# 9393)
